Building a Career in Hospitality: Chris’s Apprenticeship Story

Building a Career in Hospitality: Chris’s Apprenticeship Story

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating real apprenticeship journeys and the impact they have on learners and employers. Chris Wiltshire’s story is a great example of how apprenticeships can open doors, build confidence, and support long-term career progression.

After finishing sixth form, Chris was working increased hours at W-Italian in Rotherham when his potential was recognised by the business owners.“They said they saw that I had an interest in my job and the potential to develop well into the business environment,” Chris explains. “They thought I would be interested in taking part in the apprenticeship programme.”

At the time, Chris was keen to develop his knowledge and skills further, making the apprenticeship the perfect next step.

Building skills for the workplace

Through his apprenticeship, Chris developed a wide range of skills that supported both his role at W-Italian and his personal growth. One of the biggest challenges was learning how to manage coursework alongside the demands of a busy hospitality environment. “Time management was a challenge at the beginning, but over time I found the right balance,” he says. As his confidence grew, Chris noticed a real difference in how he worked with colleagues and interacted with customers. “The course gave me more confidence in myself, which helped me provide better service to guests and work better with other members of staff.”

Learning that makes sense

A key benefit of Chris’s apprenticeship was how closely his learning aligned with his day-to-day role. “When the restaurant was quieter, I would complete coursework, and it was good to see how it linked directly to the work I was doing,” he explains. “It really showed the importance of the apprenticeship.” This combination of learning and practical experience helped Chris understand the hospitality industry in greater depth and apply his knowledge immediately.

The power of support

Chris highlights the importance of the support he received from his Skern Training & Skills trainer, Des, throughout his apprenticeship. “The support was brilliant. It gave me the confidence to ask questions and provided guidance whenever I needed it.” With this support, Chris developed strong problem-solving, communication, and time management skills — all essential for progression in hospitality.

Making a real impact

As part of his Level 2 apprenticeship, Chris completed a project focused on improving accessibility for customers. “I created a braille menu for blind or partially sighted customers,” Chris explains. “It was eye-opening to see how many people are affected by sight loss.” The project resulted in a practical resource that could be used by customers at W-Italian, demonstrating how apprenticeships can deliver real value to businesses.

Progression through apprenticeships

Chris completed his Food and Beverage Level 2 apprenticeship and progressed onto the Hospitality Supervisor Level 3, achieving a Distinction in both. “The apprenticeship has allowed me to excel at work and provide a better experience for guests,” he says.

Chris’s advice for National Apprenticeship Week

“Take the opportunity and do it. It’s had a real impact on me and my job. The team at Skern have been fantastic, and the support makes a huge difference.” This National Apprenticeship Week, Chris’s story shows how apprenticeships help learners gain confidence, develop industry-ready skills, and achieve meaningful progression.
